“Moving to an island wasn’t something we had ever imagined doing. But when our first child was born, the draw toward something beyond subway stations and city lights grew too strong to ignore. Two months later, we packed up and left. The house—a 1904 limestone smithy—had never been lived in. It lacked water, a kitchen, and insulation. It’s been an adventure marked by scraped knuckles, late nights, and a newfound talent for masonry as we worked to restore its soul.
